New House and Garages, Marlow-on-Thames

Our clients bought a small bungalow on a narrow and awkward shaped plot in this pleasant riverside town, with the idea of creating something larger for their family.  Against the odds we successfully achieved planning approval for a substantial modern two / three storey 5 / 6-bedroom family home, with garaging for 3 cars.

The entrance to the property was via a long but narrow driveway that lay between other dwellings in the road, with the site beyond the end point of the drive (which we would later make a gated entrance) where the building was located.  Originally, the bungalow lay in line with the drive and to one side, so was hidden from view. 

The MGA design was developed to provide a wide and impressive main entrance that could be seen from the road, with car parking and a parking courtyard as the first area visitors arrive at once past the entrance gates.   The entrance became a design feature, and curves were used in the design to lead visitors to the front door, a welcoming place that by virtue of the curves enabled the creation of a sheltered reception point. 

Once inside the dwelling, the hall is light, and airy, with a grand curved staircase leading to a galleried landing which has the benefit of full width glazing at first floor level.  Central to the entrance lies the building’s main living hub, the kitchen and breakfast room, which is bathed in daylight from the all glass breakfast area beyond a very functional and spacious kitchen.  To each side of this hub lies the main dining room and lounge, which are in addition to study and family room, and a laundry, which also has its own entrance off the garage area and courtyard.  A special feature of this home, which appealed to the family, was a washing collection point at first floor level, with a chute to the laundry below.  No more washing basket trips to the washing machine!

At first floor level are 5 en-suited bedrooms and above the garage is a gymnasium.  The attic space was designed to be completely open with a vaulted ceiling, and provides an impressive space as an indoor cinema or recreation room.
